The last post got me thinking about business models for Independent Software Vendors, an area my Consulting company will be expanding into soon. Clients derive value from your product when they run and use it, not when they copy it. So why not provide licensed users with the right to copy, distribute and modify free of charge? There would have to be some restrictions about what they could do with the modifications, of course. It provides an incentive to use and extend your product because it is open and can be made to integrate with your other business systems.

No Shit Sherlock. It amazes me how many people still misunderstand the concept of "Free" software. In the original GNU concept of free software, free has nothing to do with cash, but with the usage and distribution of software. Free Software means four things: 1. Users are free to run the application, 2. users must be given access to the source code, 3. users are free to modify the sourcecode and 4. users are free to redistribute those modifications. "Free" softwware can make money. However, because the GNU "Free" license statement that the users must be free to run the software for any use, this prevents most people from making money. Because the internet allows Free software to be easily and freely distributed, there is no benefit to paying for distribution. This is where the concept of Free software is flawed. Software delivers its value when it is executed. It has no tangible value before that.

A new software podcast I discovered. Focused on .NET.

Doug Kaye produces a podcast/website resource called "IT Converations". It is a collection of interviews, conversations, presentations and lectures on technology (right now) related items. I suggest you check it out. His lofty goal is to capture knowledge that is typically lost such as at conferences, etc. and record, edit and preserve those items for others to access. It is a smart idea in my opinion. Technology conferences are so expensive, and it's hard to get true nuggets of information from them. This is an effective way to improve that process of disseminating knowledge and practices from key individuals in the industry.
