Matt makes a good point about the barriers to change in User Interface land. Microsoft and Apple are scared to drasticly modify their User Interfaces even though many of the points Matt makes are correct. PU! I say.
Do you know why Rail Road tracks are the distance they are apart? It goes all the way back to the roman's chariots. The Wheels would make ruts and this bacame the standard width for wheeled vehicles. Trains sit on narrow tracks, which severely limits their speed and stability, but it would cost too much to reengineer the tracks. Trains could be made twice as fast and twice as safe at the same time.
When good interfaces go crufty: "Matthew Thomas: "Unfortunately, over the past 20 years, IÕve noticed that cruft has been appearing in computer interfaces. And few people are trying to fix it. I see two main reasons for this."" Source: Studio Log
